Dreamgirls
Dreamgirls was so awesome, I just want more of it. I don't even care if it's the stuff that wasn't good enough to put in the film, I just want it. The good stuff on this DVD is actually just more of the good stuff from the film, so that's even better. Disc two is also filled with behind the scenes spots on editing, design, previsualization but I just wanted to see more music.
DVD Review: Dreamgirls
Most of the extra performances are extended, not deleted, so it's not totally new music, but it's more high energy performances in fuller, more robust form. There's a little more buildup and more fleshing out of some of the songs with plot-related interludes. A three hour long movie would have been fine with me, but just click "Play All" and get a 30-some minute summary of the film with these extended romps. It's all in full, polished, edited, anamorphic quality so it's just like the film.
Jennifer Hudson does get a ballad and you know how she belts it out. It's probably her least inspiring performance of the whole film, which is why it was deleted, but it's kind of like a bad orgasm. Still pretty good singing there.
Auditions and Screen Tests are good too. You get to hear Beyonce perform "Dreamgirls" to acoustic piano! Please release this to iTunes. Anika Noni Rose does "Ain't No Party" which isn't even in the movie. It's her big solo number and it's here. Wonder where Jennifer Hudson's acoustic "I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" is. But a choreography audition is interesting. It has all the energy of the full performance with just five guys in a dance studio.
