If there is one thing I want to see in Star Trek XI it is watching a younger James T. Kirk cheat during the Starfleet training exercise known as the Kobayashi Maru. The exercise presents the student with a no-win scenario, which supposedly nobody could pass but Kirk. We hear of the exercise in the best Star Trek film ever, Wrath of Khan, and Kirk's admission that he cheated to beat it.
Though we had always assumed that we would be watching a young pre-Captain Kirk in Star Trek XI, something that keeps to the assumption that the film is a prequel, JJ Abrams has only recently confirmed Kirk's existence.
Kirk Confirmed for Star Trek XI
During a recent interview with Star Trek Magazine, reprinted at TrekMovie, JJ Abrams broke the silence and admitted that "James T. Kirk appears in the movie."
Not much, I know, but he does say a little more.
The respect we all have for Star Trek canon - and for a brand-new audience - is massive. The script is done. We’re now starting pre-prep, and we can’t wait to start shooting! Many more details to follow!
JJ Abrams has proven himself as both a master of storytelling (LOST) and action/suspense (M:I:III). Hopefully the director will soon admit whether this film is a prequel or not. Based on what we have already heard, 90% odds on it being a prequel.
If all goes to plan, Star Trek XI will open to theatres in
2008.
