So Lucasfilm does have a sense of humor! After being bitched out by them (over the phone) some time near the DVD release of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (no joke), I had begun to wonder if there was any fandom left in the biggest fan-creating studio.
Lucas, who is likely trying to earn some points with fans after creating some bazillion-odd versions of the Star Wars trilogy, is looking to team up with Robot Chicken creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich to help create a parody special for Adult Swim.
Lucas Teams with Robot Chicken for Star Wars Parody
Robot Chicken will release a 30-minute stop-motion animation special, directed by Green, that will spoof key scenes and favorite characters from the Star Wars trilogy. Not only will Lucas get spoofed in the episode, but the director has agreed to help out on set and provide the voice for his own character.
Lucas isn't the only big name to appear in the parody. The episode will also feature Mark Hamill as the voice of Luke Skywalker in one sketch and a voice cast that includes Conan O'Brien, Seth MacFarlane, Robert Smigel, Malcolm McDowell, Hulk Hogan, James Van Der Beek, Donald Faison, Abraham Benrubi, Breckin Meyer and Joey Fatone.
Though one can only wonder what Robot Chicken and Lucas has in store for us, we won't have that long to wait. Adult Swim will air the Star Wars episode on June 17th at 10 PM. The parody will kick off a best-of Robot Chicken marathon that is bound to feature the Emperor phone call with Darth Vader after the explosion of the Death Star.
"We were big fans of the work that Matt and Seth had done, so when they approached us about the idea to make a 'Robot Chicken' episode dedicated to Star Wars, we were really enthusiastic about it," said Tom Warner, Lucasfilm's senior director of marketing.
Like the rest of us, Green is a huge Star Wars fan.
