The Golden Compass
I might as well come out and admit it. When I first read The Golden Compass I misread what a daemon actually was. By the time I finished the book I assumed a daemon represented each characters conscience; hence why Lyra's daemon, Pantalaimon, always seemed to be the voice of reason.
Now that I am on to the second installment in the Dark Materials franchise, The Subtle Knife, I have come to realize that the daemon was more like ones own soul existing on the outside of their body in animal form. I like this idea better than my own and the official website for The Golden Compass explains what exactly a daemon is -- a soul.
Meet Your Daemon: The Golden Compass
Though our universe does not contain daemons -- our souls remain inside of us -- the official website allows you to meet your daemon if you were to have one. If you have yet to achieve adolescence, it doesn't really matter what animal the site chooses for you, as it can still change into anything it wants.
After running through the series of twenty questions, it turns out that my daemon's name is Pelagia and is one of 1119 wildcat daemons. Fortunately I like cats, or I'd kick this thing to the curb... and, unfortunately, die with it.
