Due to shipping delays I'm just now getting to this major DVD release, and for the record, I have moved on from my JVC HDTV to a Toshiba model. Still 56", still 720p but nobody's broadcasting any higher than that so it's fine.
DVD Review: Casino Royale
The first scene I jumped to was the awesome animated title sequence. Since animated movies reproduce best in the progressive scan conversion, I thought this would be an ideal demo and it was. The colors and shapes are as solid as you'd expect, but perhaps most shocking was the sound coming from the set's internal speakers. I don't have surround hooked up but I felt a full orchestra around me.
Other scenes from the film hold up equally. Pretty much all the outdoors shots are as colorful as can be short of Discovery Channel HD. The Bahama scenes have a tropical glow, especially Daniel Craig's glistening body coming out of the ocean… sorry. The Africa scenes are sweaty and grimy as intended.
The interiors may look slightly more artificial. It is more constructed lighting but it's still reproducing what the filmmakers intended. The torture scene looks like a high budget version of Saw.
