Grindhouse
Grindhouse may become one of the most remembered films for 2007. With more talent behind the project than you can shake a fist at, the combo-film has experienced quite a bumpy road after its theatrical release. Though hailed by fanboys and critics willing to visit theatres and actually watch the presentation from Rodriguez and Tarantino, Weinstein and other distributors are stuck with a shouldn't-have-been-a-flop on their hands.
After running secret tests a couple weekends back that split Grindhouse into two films, Planet Terror and Death Proof, Weinstein was left speechless on what to do with the project. In short, the split didn't work.
As it turns out, they aren't the only distributor who is worried.
Grindhouse On Hold in the UK
According to an announcement by Momentum Pictures, the UK distributor of Grindhouse (posted at FilmStalker), the UK release of the film has been put on an unspecified hold.
"We are reviewing the release date and the release plans in the UK. It will definitely be released here but we don’t know in what form."
When they say 'what form', it means that Momentum is contemplating splitting Grindhouse in two as well. Worse than that is the message the distributor is sending -- they are no longer confident in the film.
If the film does get spliced, one can only wonder what will happen to the intermission trailers. Though some of you (who actually saw the film) did not care for them, I found them to be the icing on this magnificent cake.
If you moviegoers in the UK want to be mad at somebody, might as well point your fingers at your moviegoing buddies in the States. At least we got to see the film on time.
