The fans are not deterred! Though Spider-Man 3 entered theatres late Thursday under a curtain of mixed reviews, the film was still able to pull in a record-breaking amount at the box office.

Spider-Man 3 Breaks Box Office Records

Remember my box office debate on Spider-Man 3 vs. Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End? Well, let me just say that Spider-Man 3 just had a huge start by shattering the North American box office record for 'biggest opening weekend.' The film was able to pull in $148 million domestically and, for a little extra skrilla, also took the title of 'biggest worldwide weekend' as well. But how much is that?

Enough to help Sony execs relax on what is now being called the most expensive film ever. With $375 million to line Spidey's spandex suit, Sony now has to look forward to their second weekend.

Even with a 60% drop in attendance (possible with the mixed reviews), the film's worldwide take should cumulate to $600 million by the time next Sunday closes out.

The title of 'biggest first day' and 'biggest opening weekend' was held by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest with $55.8 million and $135.6 million respectively.

Though Dead Man's Chest gave up both titles in as little as three days, it could only take three weeks before At Worlds End recovers what was lost.

Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 earned $114.8 million and $88.1 million respectively their opening weekends, making Spider-Man 3 the franchise's biggest earner.

Spider-Man 3 will go into next week with no new tentpole competition, giving the film its last chance to go big.

With numbers like this, how can Sony pass on a Spider-Man 4?
