I thought we’d be disco dancing all over the place with tonight’s mentor Barry Gibb. This was not the case – many ballads were chosen. The performances ranged from awful to perfection. Each contestant sang two songs tonight.

You know the drill; let’s rank them from best to bottom:

American Idol S6 (Finalist) Episode 9 Recap

1. Jordin “To Love Somebody” by the Bee Gees – all I can say is perfection – Randy said best vocal so far tonight, won the night – Paula said best vocal tonight – Simon said Best song choice, best performance so far.

“Woman in Love”, the Barbra Streisand version – sounded much better when singing by the piano with Barry – arrangement hurt her performance – Randy said pitchy all the way through – Paula said look beautiful, you know how it went – Simon said old fashioned and ‘pageanty’.

2. Melinda “Love You Inside and Out” by the Bee Gees – good – made it more R&B and less of a ballad – almost boring – Randy said solid performance, good – Paula said vocals always spot on, looking for something to wow us – Simon said what Paula trying to say is the judges not that impressed, looking for something incredible.

“How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” by the Bee Gees – much better effort – soulful – Randy said much better, beautiful ending – Paula said beautiful vocal, brilliant technician – Simon said second half of that song put her in semi-finals.

3. LaKisha “Stayin Alive” by the Bee Gees – slower, bluesy version – worked with her voice – Randy said wasn’t working, tried to do too much with it – Paula said taking the tempo down took the audience out of it – Simon said no kiss tonight baby.

“Run to Me” by the Bee Gees – ballad suited her, though some parts good others borderline screamy – Randy said much better than the first song – Paula said still a champ – Simon said better than first song, not great, she and Blake vulnerable tonight.

4. Blake “You Should Be Dancin’” by the Bee Gees – too much echo in the mike – not with music – definite miss – Randy said beat box didn’t work, made it corny – Paula said pitch off, not his best night – Simon said I’ll give you unique, absolutely terrible.

“This is Where I Came In” by the Bee Gees – clear, ok performance, did not need to do the beat box again, could have done something different – Randy said better than last one, liked Reggae spin, doesn’t have to be beat box every time(didn’t I just say that?)- Paula said contemporary rebel, spot on key – Simon said tuneless, doesn’t know why he chose it, weird song choice

I will be dusting off my Sergio Valenti jeans, Candies heels and polyester top, because I should be dancin’ with Barry Gibb performing Wednesday night. We will also get the results that will take us to the semi-finals.

American Idol
results on Fox tomorrow.
