Maria Bello
Though the third The Mummy installment had its lead hero, villain and supporting cast, a replacement had yet to be found for Rachel Weisz, the franchise's leading lady.
History of Violence's muff-flashing Maria Bello has stepped in as the new Mrs. O'Connell.
Maria Bello for The Mummy
Maria Bello will join Brendan Fraser, Luke Ford, Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh in the Rob Cohen-directed Mummy installment. Bello will play Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell, a role original reprised by Rachel Weisz.
Scripted by Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, the film brings the O'Connells and their full-grown son (Ford) to the forbidden tombs of China and the Himalayas, where they battle a shape-shifting mummy, a former Chinese emperor (Li) cursed by a wizard (Yeoh).
Since the first two Mummy films grossed more than $830 worldwide for Universal, it comes as no surprise that the studio is trying to complete a trilogy; I am surprised, however, that it took them this long.
Maria Bello recently appeared in Flicka and will next star in The Jane Austen Book Club.
Universal hopes to have The Mummy 3 in theatres by next summer.
