Though there are only two episodes of Heroes left, NBC has surprised fans and the industry this morning by announcing a spin-off of the show set to fill the void over the summer hiatus. You are reading correctly, even more Heroes!
Heroes: Origins
Heroes: Origins will air in Heroes' Monday night time slot when the series goes on hiatus. NBC has ordered six segs of Heroes: Origins, which, combined with Heroes, makes for 30 hours altogether.
The spin-off will center on characters that have not yet been seen in the original show. Trying to make the series as interactive as possible, NBC will allow viewers to pick their favorite new hero from Origins and that person will then join the cast of the original Heroes the following year. Capiche?
NBC's move to prolong a season is being spread to other shows as well. With repeats dipping to record lows on all the networks, NBC plans to also extend The Office and My Name is Earl.
"Last year we promised a return to the NBC legacy of quality, and in terms of awards, buzz and critical acclaim, that's just what we delivered," NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly said. "We've got the class and next season we're ready to add some mass, with new shows that build on the creative accomplishments of last season and are as broad as they are good. Combine the energy of these new programs with the bulked-up strength of our existing NBC hits and you've got a lineup that's poised to take us to the next level."
He could have just said 'less repeats, new programming' and we would have got the message.
