In the wake of Spider-Man 3's record breaking opening weekend, other big summer films have taken measures to distinguish themselves. For example, Transformers director Michael Bay released final images of many of the film's major CGI characters. Producer Tom DeSanto feels the maneuver had the desired effect.

"I think it's to get those images out there so that people start to see these characters as characters and not just gimmicky set pieces," he said.
DeSanto also test screened the film last week and found audiences approving of the characters in motion. "I compare it to the reaction to we had from X-Men. It was some people want to stay the traditional route, but as long as you stay true to the heart and soul of what those characters are, Wolverine is still Wolverine whether he's 6'3" Hugh Jackman or 5'3" Logan from the comic books. That's the key, just staying true to the heart of the characters."
Speaking of which, DeSanto won't have time to produce spin-offs like Magneto or Wolverine. "Not as of right now but X-Men was great. It was a movie I wanted to do since I was 12. How many kids get to come out from New Jersey to Hollywood and make their dreams come true?"
Back to the beginning though, with Spider-Man 3 raising the bar for summer openings, DeSanto doesn't have a specific number in mind for July 4. "You know what? I just want a weekend that leaves people happy leaving the movie theaters. If we make the fans happy and we make nonfans happy, we've done our job. The money's great. I think we'll be fine. I don't see any problem with our box office but I'm excited because in a summer of sequels, we're something new."
Transformers opens to theatres on July 4th.
