Spider-Man 3 has finally faced some summer competition thank to DreamWorks and their third Shrek installment, Shrek the Third. Stepping into theaters late Thursday, the CG-animated adventure took in an estimated $38.1 million its first day.
Friday Box Office: Shrek the Third
Though the late Thursday showings were only able to pull in just under $1 million for Shrek the Third, the film is still hoping to set weekend records with damn near $40 million its first (real) day. If numbers hold up through the weekend, Shrek the Third will easily place among the highest opening weekend box office earners and be one of Paramount/DreamWorks' all-time best bows.
Spider-Man 3, which is now being forced to take on some tentpole competition, had another large drop this Friday with close to $8 million in ticket sales; well below half what it did last Friday.
Though 28 Weeks Later continues to receive some great reviews, the apocalypse/zombie flick was only able to take in an estimated $1.7 million on Friday - bringing the film's total cume to $15.1 million.
Does Shrek the Third have the legs to carry similar numbers through Sunday? Check in tomorrow night to find out!
