Shrek the Third
So far a huge year for summer blockbusters. Thanks to extremely-wide releases, Spider-Man 3 kicked off the record breaking with 'biggest opening ever' and now Shrek the Third -- the first summer tentpole to arrive after Spidey -- has followed suit with some box office records of its own.
Box Office: Shrek the Third
Spider-Man 3 might have the title of 'biggest opening ever' -- something it might have to struggle to hold onto this summer -- but Shrek the Third got the exclusive on 'top animated bow'.
With $122 million over three days, Shrek the Third beat the previous animated record held by, you guess it, Shrek 2. The second installment opened at $108 million and ended up finishing up with $436.7 million domestically. Though Shrek the Third had a grander start, the film might not be able to match up to Shrek 2's total cume. Why? Well, not to be harsh, but Shrek the Third was no Shrek 2. Capiche?
DreamWorks Animation admitted that Shrek the Third's opening bow was 'significantly' above what was expected.
Like Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third represents the new trend of sequels performing beyond expectations at the box office under the curtain of lackluster reviews.
