For one, Spider-Man 3 had a larger-than-expected opening weekend and the draw towards Pirates 3 (judging solely on our very own reader response) seems to be much less than what it was for Spidey at the beginning of May.
It's Time! Spider-Man 3 vs. Pirates 3
Though 52% of the 69K+ votes are still betting on Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End, I believe the final outcome will completely rely on Johnny Depp and the Pirate crew's staying power.
Though Spider-Man 3 had a huge start, it is now struggling to make it to the one-billion mark; something that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest made look easy. If the early reviews are true and this third installment is better than the second Pirates, the next issue Disney will have to face is the film's almost-three-hour running time. Though fans rejoice such lengths with films to the likes of Lord of the Rings, Grindhouse proved that long showings can kill a box office take.
So who will win by the time both films exit theaters?
Even though my opinion has been swayed a bit by recent factors, I am still going to have to predict Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End as the box office victor for both domestic and worldwide take. If the film is on track to hit one-billion after three weeks, we can assume Disney has it clenched. The studio, however, is hoping to start by taking back some of the box office records recently stolen by Spider-Man 3.
The early showings on Thursday should definitely help lead to this outcome.
