DVD Review: 40 Year Old Virgin - Double Your Pleasure Edition
Now, this is confusing. The box says that the all new exclusives include 17 minutes of deleted scenes, but these look familiar. But, if you wait, or skip ahead, you'll get to new stuff. Hint: They didn't record commentary for the new scenes.
You'll get to hear Andy's neighbors act on their comments from early in the movie. Andy's childhood nightmare is a little more disturbing than funny. A deleted pickup attempt is a painful missed opportunity. There's some physical slapstick, urinary humor and it's Steve Carell's gusto that sells some puerile gags. They've also got the scene I saw them shoot on the set, with Romany Malco comparing Andy's chest hair to celebrities. So that finally makes it into the archives. Elizabeth Banks gets another scene, being suggestively adorable. Seth Rogen's germ phobia seems out of place but it's good and gross, and his reaction to speed dating is appropriately vulgar.
The old features still work. An extended run of "You know how I know you're gay?" is funny not only for the gay lines. The build-up is a funny riff. It actually shows you how the riff begins, but the gay stuff isn't as funny as the suicide and novel-writing material.
An extended speed dating scene has some beautifully awful meetings. Politically incorrect and outrageous, there are some wonderfully distinct personalities in the rotation. The angry woman is blissfully evil, the phone call woman deliriously oblivious and the female virgin should have absolutely been in the movie just on principal. The other guys get some good bits in there too, there's more with Gina and the return of a scene-stealer that awesomely pays off in subtle ways. All this and more tit girl too!
Line-O-Rama gives you alternate readings of key scenes. Some of them are genuinely clever, others are just obvious alternates. The vulgar ones are the funniest, proving that there can be great art found in obscenity, but only by professionals.
There is a lot of raw material that is more informative. Judd Apatow's video diaries show the mundane, daily grind of making a movie. They riff a little behind the scenes but it's more painful, like, "Please help me get through this." That is what set work is like, folks. Thankfully, these are nice and short, not like a whole day on set.
Rehearsal stuff is also more informative than hilarious. It's raw, watching the scenes form. Auditions are interesting because Elizabeth Banks is so god damn hot in her scene. Possibly hotter than in the movie, because it's like natural but turning on the sex. All the other supporting players do kind of standard scenes, but it's clear how they sold the character at this early stage.
An old sex ed film is just so relevant it's hilarious to see it out of context. This sort of material is what led to 40-year-old virgins so thank God they've been eradicated.
