Though I am still all for Jim Carrey's transition out of the comedic genre, it is nice to see him going back to his roots (more often than not). Here's a small shift - the actor will star in a dark comedy from the same people who brought us Bad Santa.
Jim Carrey for I Love You Phillip Morris
Jim Carrey will star in I Love You Phillip Morris, a dark comedy that was written and will mark the directing debut of Glenn Ficarra and John Requa.
The film is surprisingly fact-based with Carrey playing Steven Russell, a married father whose exploits landed him in the Texas criminal justice system.
He fell madly in love with his cellmate, who eventually was set free, which led Russell to escape from Texas prisons four times. Script has some of the dark edges of Bad Santa but is grounded by the affable and lovesick character of Russell.
Producer Andrew Lazar bought the story and showed it to Carrey first.
Project was pitched to financiers as Catch Me if You Can meets Brokeback Mountain. It went to Besson's Europacorp.
With so many films on Carrey's to-do list, it is still unknown when he will be able to open up a slot for Phillip Morris.
