Flags of Our Fathers 2-Disc Special Edition
Flags of Our Fathers has often been compared to Saving Private Ryan, but this comparison overlooks the actual meanings of the films. Saving Private Ryan is a fictional story that shows life in warfare. Flags of Our Fathers is a true story about the men in the iconic photo of the Flag-raising over Iwo Jima.
DVD Review: Flags of Our Fathers 2-Disc Special Edition
Director Clint Eastwood and producer Steven Spielberg succeeded in making every shot historically accurate. The result is a beautiful film with awe-inspiring shots of the U.S. military advancing on and through Iwo Jima. The real heart of the story though, is the incredibly true stories of these men who survived the atrocities they both saw and committed. Dealing with feelings of guilt and suppressing memories of horror, these men were thrust into the American limelight by the infamous photo.
The 2nd disc of this edition contains several hours of special features. The major theme of the movie and the special features is that the survivors of Iwo Jima never felt like the heroes their country made them out to be. The author of the novel, Flags of Our Fathers, is the son of one of the marines who raised the flag. The most moving extra on the disc follows how he researched and developed such a complicated and honest story about his father and the other 5 men in the iconic photo. There are also some very nice documentaries that delve into the realities of war faced on Iwo Jima using original first-hand war footage.
It’s not a film full of action-packed battle scenes; it strives for much more. Eastwood provides an honest thought-provoking epic about the young men who changed the path of World War II and how it changed their lives as well. If the movie about these men doesn’t impress and move you, the special features disc will.
