Though Spider-Man 3 is still leading the box office race, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End grabbed hold of another record of its own. The film's international take has recently broke the $500 million mark in a record-setting 20 days.
International Box Office Record: Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End
Sony might still have the up on overall box office take, Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End beat Spidey's mark for fastest film to reach half a billion dollars in overseas grosses by an entire week. The international success means that foreign markets are supplying two of every three dollars the film has taken in worldwide.
At World's End is only the 15th film to break the half-billion milestone.
As of Tuesday night, At World's End had a foreign cume at $505.6 million, while the domestic numbers hit $257.7 million, lifting the film's worldwide gross to $763 million -- 21st highest of all time. Since the film's domestic take is declining much more rapidly than the international, the foreign markets represented 70% of last weekend's worldwide take for Pirates.
Anthony Marcoly, BVI president of sales and distribution, is confident that At World's End will pass $600 million overseas -- a feat only accomplished by six other films including Dead Man's Chest, Titanic, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, and three of the four Harry Potter films.
"The holds have been excellent throughout the world, and there's no market that has disappointed us."
