Stand-up comedian and frequent Best Week Ever commentator Ant will be one of the three talent scouts on the new season of Last Comic Standing. He has to be as brutal to hopeful comedians as he is to the week's pop culture, only the comics can fight back.
Ant on Last Comic Standing
"The greatest thing about having Bill [Bellamy] as a host is he's at the audition cities watching on a monitor what happens in the room," said Ant. "And he comes running in at the break, 'You're dead. That comic is going to kill you.' I personally can't go back to Minneapolis, or San Antonio. I'm moving to Cleveland."
That means that the ones who make it to the show live up to Ant's high standards. "There are some giant surprises in the show this year. Giant surprises in the show this year. It's not your mama's Last Comic Standing. It's completely, completely, completely different. Just because of the comics that we picked, and one in particular, who I'm just so thrilled [about]."
Those that didn't make the cut got priceless advice. "I've noticed, the comics that didn't get picked that have come up to me in clubs and say, 'Well, what was it about my set?' And I felt free to say, 'Well, you know, you were sort of hacky' or 'You're not treading any new ground here' or 'You're not ready.'"
Sometimes, that last comment is more beneficial than a slot on the show. "We've sort of helped people along that way by saying, 'You're funny now, but we're not going to pick you because you just don't have the material. And you are going to be doing yourself a disservice, and you deserve better than that, so come back next year.'"
