Want to see what it takes to deliver the stunning images in Ratatouille? Well, Pixar thought you would, and has delivered to progression reels that show us exactly all the stages of work that go into creating a single scene.
Progression Reels: Ratatouille
It all starts with a 'storyboard', then it goes to a 'layout', then becomes a little better with 'blocking animation', then we jump to 'animation', then some more detail arrives with 'simulation', but we can't forget about 'effects', or the 'lighting' for that matter.
Simple, right?
Progression Reel – This two-and-a-half-minute Ratatouille reel shows Linguini (voiced by Lou Romano) in the kitchen with Colette (Janeane Garofalo). It is a series of rough storyboards with the final voice recordings overlaying the scenes. As it progresses, layers of animation, from blocking to simulation, effects and lighting are added, pronouncing the craft and effort that goes into animating a movie. Windows Media Quicktime
Chef’s Montage – Watch the final version of the progression reel scene as Collette shows Linguini how to get around in the kitchen. Windows Media Quicktime
