Hugh Jackman is Wolverine
With a finished script from scribe David Benioff, Twentieth Century Fox's next move was to find a director for their X-Men spin-off, Wolverine.
Gavin Hood to Direct Wolverine
An interesting choice, Fox decided to go with South African director Gavin Hood, best known for Tsotsi, which ended up taking home an Oscar for foreign film. Hood was one of many on a long list for the job, but ended up clenching the position after Fox watched his latest film, Rendition, the politically charged New Line drama starring Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhaal, Meryl Streep and Peter Sarsgaard. The film doesn't open to theaters until October 19th.
Using a mixture of the X-Men comics and the more recent Weapon X graphic novels by Frank Miller, Wolverine will tell the story of how Logan emerged from mutant experimentation with an indestructible skeleton and retractable claws.
"I have long been a fan of Gavin's work and know he will make a masterful film with the character intensity and action beats the fans expect," said Jackman.
Since the X-Men franchise has already earned Fox more than $1 billion worldwide, it comes as no surprise that the Wolverine spin-off is top priority.
