Many people would love to have an angel watching over them, but it’s usually only the ones in the most dire situations that get to meet them. Grace (Holly Hunter) meets her angel, Earl (Leon Rippy) on the series Saving Grace. Rippy himself thanks God, or at least his series creator Nancy Miller, for the part.
Leon Rippy an Angel for Saving Grace
“It probably is closer to my personality than anything I’ve ever done,” said Rippy. “Nancy, obviously what she created, I looked at it and I said, ‘I don’t have to do very much except put on these clothes.”
A character actor with a diverse resume, Earl may be Rippy’s most endearing performance. “There’s nothing to really dislike about an angel, that I found. I’m the most blessed guy in town, to be able to deliver these words with meaning. And so much of my career has been spent taking characters with unredeemable qualities and trying to invent some.”
Rippy also corrects some viewers on their angel mythology. Earl was never a human being elevated to angel status. “Always an angel, as angels always are. I think it’s mistaken for people who say, ‘Oh, my friend died and now they’re an [angel].’”
