J.J. Abrams is trying to keep his Star Trek characters legit. When you need a Russian-born navigator you need to find yourself a Russian-born actor. Such an actor exists in Anton Yelchin, who we last watched get whacked in Alpha Dog.
This guy is going to play Checkov?
Anton Yelchin Beamed Aboard Star Trek as Pavel Checkov
Anton Yelchin is in final negotiation to join the cast of Star Trek as Pavel Checkov, James T. Kirk's Russian-born navigator onboard the USS Enterprise.
Yelchin will join Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy, who will both play the role of Mr. Spock. Casting is under way to find Kirk, Bones, Uhura, Sulu, Scotty, the film's villain and the Federation captain. Abrams, who will helm the untitled film, is expected to sign bigger-name actors for the latter two parts.
Though Star Trek's plot is still being protected like 1-18-08's real title -- both involving Abrams -- it can be guessed that the film will take place in the early days of the Enterprise crew during their time at Starfleet Academy.
Checkov was played by Walter Koenig on the original series, and was a key member of Kirk's crew.
