Mary Kate Olsen is the first young starlet in a while to make news for her work. She is joining the cast of Weeds in its third season. The controversial marijuana dramedy seems a change of pace for the wholesome twin sister, but her character seems like it eases her into the big time.
Mary Kate Olsen Joins Weeds
"Tara is from the town of Majestic and she is a good Christian girl with a twist," said Olsen. "She's a Christian. She teaches Silas and wants to tell them all about the Bible. Maybe she's stoned while doing so but she wants to tell them about it. I mean, she walks in, basically she is who she is but the audience ends up seeing really who she is as the episodes go on."
Weeds will be the first time we see Olsen appear solo. "I did a part in Factory Girl but then it was cut out so yes, this is [the first]. It doesn't feel that weird. I'm doing what I love. I go on auditions by myself so I guess I'm used to doing the parts by myself."
Though it sounds outrageous, Olsen's casting followed all the regular channels. "Well, my agents were telling me about the show and I did my research. I was surprised. It's actually one of my favorite shows now and I'm excited to see when I get the scripts every week, I'm excited to see what happens. I went in and met with [creator] Jenji [Kohan] and then I went home. And I got a call to come back and read so I did. Really everything happened from there."
While we're all making a big deal out of Mary Kate's solo debut, she's always seen herself as an individual. "I've really spent the past two years or so going on auditions and I'm really passionate about acting and working hard. I do a lot of other stuff in my life. I do fashion and I'm very passionate about that. I'm just fortunate enough to be a part of this group. It will always be that celebrity title or whatever you want to call it but hopefully my work speaks for itself."
