Though Paramount Pictures is supposedly happy with Sweeney Todd, they are still requesting that Tim Burton butcher it. Though R-rated films have been a hit of recent, Paramount would still be more comfortable with a PG-13.
Cut for PG-13, Sweeney Todd
The good people at /Film have been alerted that Tim Burton is being requested to chop up what could be gore-tastic greatness. The early footage of Sweeney Todd supposedly looks great, it is just so bloody that the studio execs can't help but recognize an R-rated film; this unfortunately doesn't work for them.
“Tim’s not happy that the studio is asking for so many cuts to the cutting, as it were,” someone connected to the film told the Daily Mail. “The thing is, the studio really likes the film and they want to make it accessible to as big an audience as possible - which means stemming the blood flow. But that’s a bit difficult for a story involving a guy who gets high slitting throats.”
If the studio was nervous about Depp running around slitting throats, they were sure to be squeamish when a young character begins chopping up the freshly-dead bodies to mince into meat.
