Sweeney Todd
Talk about a turn of events. We were first told that Paramount Pictures, though happy with what they saw from Sweeney Todd, requested that Tim Burton cut the shit out of it in order to drop the films gore to a PG-13 rating. The troubling news now doesn't seem to fit, as Paramount has recently announced that they have pushed up the wide release of Sweeney Todd to the film's originally-planned limited release, December 21st. So Burton won't be spending extra time cutting the film apart?
Limited Release Goes Wide for Sweeney Todd
It turns out that Paramount figured Sweeney Todd would need an earlier limited release in order to build buzz for a film they thought to have a small target audience. But the studio is now playing a different tune after being shown some early clips from the film. Paramount is now hoping that Depp's role as the barber of Fleet Street could be the sort of signature role for Depp that Captain Jack was for Pirates.
