Next
I always secretly like it when a big budget movie like Next does poorly at the box office and I don't even get a chance to review it. That means that when it comes out on DVD, I'll get to enjoy a first run Hollywood movie in the privacy of my own home.
DVD Review: Next
There's certainly nothing wrong with Next. It's a big action sci-fi film with Nicolas Cage's hair blowing through the wind as he runs in slow motion. It doesn't pretend to be anything more and it's plenty fun.
The gimmick here is that we see every version of what could happen. Usually it's the future he sees and then the present he changes, but sometimes they get even more audacious with the gimmick. Without that, it would be pretty standard shootouts and chases, but this makes it fun.
Cage gives his usual intense character performance that's way deeper than the material. They have plenty of fun with him using his gift in normal life, mainly in picking up Jessica Biel. He actually stole one of my lines, but it didn't work in the movie so I'll let him have it.
Maybe it's that Déjà vu came out first with a similar time travel premise. Or maybe audiences can only handle so much of Nicolas Cage's hair blowing in the wind and they already saw Ghost Rider. But I'm glad to have it delivered right to my home. I didn't even watch the extras this time. Just having a brand spankin' new Nic Cage action movie was bonus enough for me.
