The Brave One
Jodie Foster is a surprising actress. She sneaks on these roles, all of which different from the other, and ends up making some skrilla at the box office. The latest installment in the Foster franchise hit theaters this weekend as The
Brave One. A film strikingly similar to Kevin Bacon's Death Sentence, this revenge drama found strength in Foster and came in at number one during this weekend's box office.
Box Office Winner: The Brave One
Though this usually-soft weekend featured a crapload of new releases, it was Jodie Foster's The Brave One that came in as number one with $14 million. The film's opening take didn't compare to Flightplan's $24.6 million or Panic Room's $30 million, but it also didn't have as wide appeal; though I can't honestly find anything wrong with a woman running around shooting law-breaking gangbangers.
Though number one, it was the smaller films that really won over the weekend. Viggo Mortensen and his Eastern Promises took in a solid $36,851 per screen with Across the Universe following up by belting out $29,783 per location.
With The Brave One coming in as number one, this weekend marked the fifth frame in a row with an R-rated title on top -- something that hasn't happened since 2001.
A film I hope you all see, 3:10 to Yuma narrowly beat Mr. Woodcock for the number two spot. The Western declined only 35% in its second frame with $9.2 million.
Dragon Wars, a film that looks more videogame trailer than an actual release, couldn't sell audiences and had to settle with a meager $4.8 million.
Warner Bros. has their fingers crossed that strong word of mouth will help keep The Brave One in the number one spot next weekend.
"We are hoping for good word of mouth. When 'Gladiator' opened, there were no women in the audience. By the second weekend, there were," said Warner Bros. president of distribution Dan Fellman, adding that the pic posted solid numbers in exit polls.
