While it was Nichelle Nichols who played Uhura, a Starfleet Academy alum in the series, it will be Zoe Saldana who will take on the role in the Abrams installment, Star Trek.

Uhura appeared in the original Star Trek series as a member of the bridge crew on the U.S.S. Enterprise. Since the film is predicted to take a look at Starfleet Academy, it comes as good news that the character is an Academy graduate who worker her way up to the rank of commander.
Abrams is producing Star Trek off a screenplay by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, which is set for a Christmas 2008 release.
Saldana has popped up in quite a few big films including Pirates of the Caribbean and Guess Who. She is currently filming James Cameron's sci-fi tentpole Avatar.
