Halo 3
When a tentpole makes over $100 million during its opening weekend, that is a HUGE opening. Then what are we to make of video games? Halo 3, in what some have compared to the second (or third) coming, earned a whopping $170 million... its first day... domestically.
Halo 3 Cashes in on Earth
Though Microsoft didn't release any official sales numbers, the amount earned suggests somewhere near 2.5 million. Microsoft is, however, already calling the first day of Halo 3 "the biggest entertainment launch in history." By just looking at the total, that would be true. But one has to take into account the fact that a single game costs $60 while a single ticket costs under $10. The tickets cost also gets spent over the course of a couple hours, while the game will last weeks and even years for gamers.
Halo 2, which earned $125 million its first day, lost the biggest-opening title to what looks to be its stronger brother.
Halo 2 ended up selling over 9.2 million units worldwide over the course of its run. If Halo 3 continues at the pace its at, it should overcome this number (with time). Microsoft will, however, need to sell some more Xbox 360's first.
"The initial demand we've seen for Halo 3 has been astounding, and the game is on track to become the number one gaming title of all time," Jill Hamburger, VP of movies and games at Best Buy, said in a statement released by Microsoft.
I enjoyed the online play for the first time tonight -- hence the late night updates -- and have found it to be just as enjoyable as Halo 2. The only issue I have found (so far) is the fact that the maps continue to look bigger.
