The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
It has been a while since we have heard of any new, big adaptations and today we have already been alerted to two ready to hit the chopping block. Though I'm not exactly sure how to pronounce the last name -- it sounds like what would happen if somebody squeezed my balls while trying to say Wo, w-Ah-o -- Miramax and producer Scott Rudin have teamed up to acquire the screen rights to The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.
Miramax Acquires The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
Written by Junot Diaz, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao focuses on a sexually frustrated, overweight youth who attends Rutgers U. and fantasizes about beautiful women. Woven into his quest to find love is a family history that goes back to the Dominican Republic and includes love, violence and a curse.
Rudin got an early look at the manuscript and courted the author before the book was brought to auction.
Rudin is also prepping The Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Reader, a Stephen Daldry-directed adaptation of the Bernhard Schlink novel that stars Nicole Kidman and Ralph Fiennes.
