Sorry, we didn't actually get Hugh Jackman for the new TV show he's producing and in which he is costarring. But his producers and costars had a lot to say about him. Viva Laughlin is the American remake of the British drama Viva Blackpool. Jackman plays a casino owner in the first episode, and that's not the last we'll see of him.

Speaking of Hugh

"He's doing some episodes in the beginning," said producer Bob Lowry. "As you know, he's doing a movie in Australia now with Baz Luhrmann, and he has a terrific feature career. His availability is purely limited to us. He's in a few episodes in the beginning, and I hope we will be able use him more and more up until our 22 episodes, even though we don't have a pickup for 22. I hope that we will go to 22 and we will use him more."

The concept of the show is that during the drama, characters will start singing popular music that relates to their characters. It took television to get Hugh Jackman singing on camera.

"We just thought he would be perfect, and he was open to it," continued Lowry. "He was really excited about doing a musical. I mean, he won a Tony for The Boy from Oz in New York, and then he's also a Wolverine. He's got an incredible range as an actor. And, you know, when approached, he found the project very exciting because he loves that venue. He loves doing the music, and he was excited by the material. And he was excited by the character and wanted to participate as much as schedule would permit."

Jackman also takes an executive producer credit, so even the show's star, Lloyd Owen, had to go through him. "Obviously, as soon as I was cast, we had many conversations about it and about his passion," said Owen. "I think he fought very hard to get this project from the BBC and it's very gratifying to have someone who could be distant in that position as executive producer and very busy as he is, but he's very much on top of this project all the time. It's a very nice feeling to have that."

Jackman's character will remain a presence in the series, though even the producers do not know exactly how many episodes on which he might appear. " I don't know how many it's going to play out at the end of the season," said Lowry. "It all depends on his availability, but he's in quite a few of the first that we have stories for him, and we haven't shot everything, and I know we're still in the story-breaking process. Bless his heart, he flew from Australia to shoot for two days. So we're already in production on one of those numbers that will play midseason. So he's going to have visibility in the show."

Viva Laughlin premieres October 18 on CBS.
