Transformers Gets Writers
A trio of writers will work together on Transformers 2 including Ehren Kruger, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. While I am sure most of you have heard of Kurtzman and Orci -- there is rarely a tentpole that doesn't have their touch on it somewhere -- Kruger is the odd man out. With a filmography that could easily be eclipsed by both Kurtman and Orci, Kruger is responsible for films such as Scream 3, Reindeer Games, The Ring, The Brothers Grimm and Blood and Chocolate.
While Kruger will have the help of the more popular writing duo on the script, one has to wonder how much. Kurtzman and Orci are extremely busy with both the Star Trek script for JJ Abrams and Eagle Eye, a film they are producing for DreamWorks. Could Kruger, for the most part, be flying solo?
The writing deal is expected to cost Paramount anywhere between $5 to $7 million, which could be an industry high for a nonoriginal screenplay. Why such a high price tag? Paramount wants the script quick, like sixty words a minute quick, and is willing to pay to give the scribes some inspiration.
It has been confirmed that Michael Bay, Shia LaBeouf, Tom DeSanto, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Don Murphy and Steven Spielberg are all back for the sequel.
Kruger does have some familiarity with Kurtzman/Orci, as the three writers are currently working together on Nightlife. Whether this familiarity means a better sequel, I cannot say.
Transformers comes out to DVD this month.
