Have audiences really been that desperate for some G-rated comedy? Sure, I get it, R-rated and PG-13 films have dominated the box office the past couple months, so maybe the kids were craving something without an F-bomb. But to give The Game Plan two weeks in a row at the top spot, both times upsetting another wide release, one has to wonder.
Word of mouth? Maybe?
Box Office Winner... Again: The Game Plan
Though The Heartbreak Kid, a raunchy comedy to the likes of Something About Mary, was supposed to steal the top spot from The Game Plan during its opening bow, it fell short.
The Heartbreak Kid averaged just $4,345 per screen at 3,229 theaters, making the remake one of Stiller's lowest openings in recent years. Hell, it even came in behind Along Came Polly.
All the Farrelly Brothers now have to hope for is the Something About effect. Their 1998 raunchy comedy, Something About Mary, bowed to disappointing numbers but, thanks to word of mouth, the film ended up taking in $176 million during its theatrical run.
The Kingdom, who was upset by The Game Plan last week, dropped 45% to $9.3 million; giving it the number three spot.
The film didn't have a shot at retaking The Game Plan, considering that the family comedy starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson only dropped 29% in its second frame.
The only new release to bow strong was Michael Clayton, which opened to 15 theaters and earned $704,000; a per screen average of $46,395. Is that strong? Well, considering that The Dark Is Rising only earned $3.75 million on 3,141 screens, what do you think?
