Lamman Rucker on Why Did I Get Married?

Women are already going crazy for Lamman Rucker in Why Did I Get Married. He plays the small town sheriff Troy who sweeps Shiela (Jill Scott) off her feet after she finds out her husband has been cheating on her. Rucker is here to say that his character is not a fantasy. He is the real deal.

"I think often the misconception is we can't wait to run away from y'all and you all are always chasing us trying to get us to commit," said Rucker. "I think you'd be surprised at how many men there are who actually really want the same things you want. We're really looking forward to the same thing. Our dreams, our fantasies are very much the same, to be completely honest with you. We're looking. We're looking for that intimacy and everything too, seriously."
Shiela has to go to the mountains of Colorado to find her man, but Troy may be closer than you think. "Sometimes I think, and I don’t want to sound accusatory in any way, people in general, often they’re looking for what they need in the wrong places. I think there are many of us, there are very many Troys and there are very many women who are unappreciative of the Troys who are out there. Now that’s not to say we don’t have a lot of work to do, because we’ve got a lot of work to do, trust me. I’m happy to say that I’m pretty much like Troy, there’s a lot of Troy in me, but we’ve all got some work to do. But we’re out there. I’ll introduce you to some of my boys. We’ll make it happen."

Troy gets to be the hero who shows how great a committed man can be. The film is full of different levels of dysfunction, hopefully promoting communication in the end. "Just like in a marriage or any relationship, it’s about honesty and communication. We all know that throughout many entertainment genres or what have you there’s no real honesty and communication. So the simplicity of what Tyler [Perry] has done through his plays and how people have gravitated to him and not just his work, but as a person is the same reason why we’re all here, that honesty and communication and that accessibility. He’s got a great personality. I give him the blues. We tease each other and give each other a hard time, but I know he’s the boss just the same and I don’t play with them. But again, they’ve established a culture that has some of the same dynamics that we’re talking about in these marriage relationships because it’s still what it is: his relationship with his fans and his relationship with us."
Perry even addresses sexually transmitted disease in one of the film's relationships. A cheating husband gets a burning sensation and his friends encourage him to come clean. Though it is not Rucker's storyline, he appreciated its inclusion.
"I particularly do a lot of work with HIV and AIDS prevention education so that was definitely something that hit close to home for me as well. It was good. I think a lot of people obviously shy away from the pressure and the responsibility of being role models or whatever language you want to use. But I also think it’s very important that you have a cast that not only as human beings, but as actors, even though characters were intelligent, highly trained, mature loving people. So we all are setting an example to some degree. If that’s the type of people and characters that we are, I found it very impressive that it was important that we were modeling at least certain types of behavior that other people would listen to and would emulate so he does a great job."
Why Did I Get Married? opens to theaters on October 12th.
