The Golden Compass
No, not the trailer just yet, but director Chris Weitz has made a startling announcement claiming that he, along with New Line, Scholastic and Philip Pullman, have decided to alter the ending of The Golden Compass. Did he remove that little religious icon from the end of the story? No, that should still be there; we just won't see it.
Doing something similar to what Peter Jackson did during Fellowship of the Ring -- but the opposite -- some of the chapters from The Golden Compass will now exist in The Subtle Knife.
Personally, I don't get it.
Golden Compass Ending Pushed
Director Ian McShane sent an open letter to the good people at HisDarkMaterials, announcing that he wants the trilogy to focus on the title character, Lyra, and that means a different ending is in order (for the first installment, at least).
I have decided, along with Scholastic and New Line and, most importantly, Philip Pullman, to shift the concluding three chapters of Book I of His Dark Materials to the beginning of the second film of our trilogy, The Subtle Knife.
To me, this provides the most promising conclusion to the first film and the best possible beginning to the second.
It has always been my main concern to portray Lyra's world and her adventures with integrity. Throughout this process I have been in close contact with Philip Pullman; and I would not be doing this without his approval.
The Golden Compass ends on one helluva twist. I don't want to give anything away, but it would seem that this twist will now take place at the beginning of Subtle Knife or, unfortunately, not at all.
Remember, new trailer for The Golden Compass arriving today.
The Golden Compass comes to theatres on December 7th.
