Simon Pegg
Here is some Star Trek news that warped in so fast it damn near smacked me in the fast. As I predicted, the Star Trek casting updates are coming in bi-daily and, no, that is not the definition of a day that swings both ways.
The two latest additions are Simon Pegg (woohoo!) and John Cho (talk about thinking outside the box!).
Simon Pegg, John Cho for Star Trek
Though both these casting updates for Star Trek come as a complete surprise -- to me at least -- they are both incredibly awesome.
Simon Pegg in general is just cool, but Simon Pegg as Scotty, Enterprise's Scottish chief engineer, will be the first step at bringing the Star Trek franchise to an even larger array of moviegoers. Simon Pegg, genius!
Montgomery "Scotty" Scott was the ship's third-in-command and was known for his problem-solving abilities in plot-critical situations. The role was originated by the late James Doohan.
Who knew a guy that started his career doing cameos in American Pie films would beam onto the Starship Enterprise? I certainly didn't! John Cho has been cast as Sulu, the Enterprise's helmsman.
Lt. Hikaru Sulu, known for his love of fencing, always was seen on deck piloting the ship next to Chekov. George Takei played the character in the 1960s TV series and the 1980s movies.
Pegg was last seen arresting corrupt officials in Hot Fuzz while Cho was running around trying to cure a bad case of the munchies in Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.
Star Trek begins production next month, with a release date set for Christmas 2008.
