Why Did I Get Married is a big break for actress Denise Boutte, but she better hope people still like her afterwards. She played the adulteress vixen Trina a little too well for some women in the audience.
Denise Boutte on Why Did I Get Married?
"Okay, I am just going to keep it real," Boutte said. "I mean, Trina exists. You know Tyler [Perry] is a very intelligent man and very creative but seriously, if you are honest, she is a character you are going to love to hate but all of us know or have known or know of a Trina type character. It was just simply the words kind of bring it to life, just going along with the flow and of course the Angela character just puts her in positions that I mean sooner or later Trina starts to fight back. She comes in trying to be sly with it and afterwards it is just so obvious and in your face that all the secrets come out. So again just paying attention to the dialogue and then feeding off of the other actors here."
Being in the role, some of Boutte's old friends had to distance themselves from her. "Before this, Tasha [Smith] and I, she was my acting teacher, so we did have a bond and we did have a friendship before then. So once we got on set, she wouldn't. She would antagonize me. She was behind the camera and she would be like mouthing off things and looking at me like she wanted to kill me. I'm just like, 'Oh, uh-uh.' So then that gave you the dynamic and the emotion because she was doing that. So she knew exactly what she was doing."
Why Did I Get Married
In real life, Boutte is faithfully married, so won't be stealing anyone else's husband. "I've been with my husband for some time now and I think that during that time apart [making the movie], I've been asking myself that. Why did I get married? Because I think that is something for you to reflect on, that can eventually make you more enriched and appreciate what it is that made you fall in love with that person in the first place. Over time, you may take that person for granted. It's just something that happens and you start looking at the nuances of the relationship and how special it is and you come to have a better appreciation for it. That's kind of how I utilized this experience."
Why Did I Get Married? opens to theaters on October 12th.
