Who knew that romantic baggage would be the number one genre? Fred already claims that Why Did I Get Married is Perry's best, and now audiences seem to agree. At least, I can't seem to remember a Tyler Perry title ever coming in at number one on the box office.
Why Did I Get Married? a Box Office Hit
While Why Did I Get Married concentrates on life (uh, baggage) after walking down the aisle, the film scored big with those who walked down an aisle and in and out of theater seats.
This week's (supposedly) bigger releases -- Michael Clayton, We Own the Night, and Elizabeth: The Golden Age -- couldn't compete. As an added kick to the face, The Game Plan continues to surprise by holding onto the number two spot.
I kid you not!
I don't know what medicine The Rock is pushing but, whatever it is, it's working.
Married came in at $21.5 million on 2,011 screens. The Game Plan declined just 30% (again) to take in $11.5 million; bringing its total cume to $59.4 million. Next in the weekend's top five comes Michael Clayton ($11.01 million) and We Own the Night ($11 million).
Though it's trailers looked a whole bunch more entertaining than the first installment, Elizabeth: The Golden Age was only able to grab a historically-inclined audience worth spending $6.2 million. The lacking dollars placed the sequel behind Stiller's The Heartbreak Kid, which declined an okay 43% over the weekend to laugh up another $7.4 million.
It looks like The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising just can't find an audience, as the film again pulled in weak numbers with $2.1 million. The fantastical adaptations total take now rests at $7.1 million.
