Jonathan Livingston Seagull
I haven’t seen a movie this bad since Date Movie. They aren’t exactly on the playing field as far as genre but ‘bad’ is how I would describe both. Filmmakers have adapted books and stories about many different things and made them into successful movies but Seagull should have been left on the shelf.
DVD Review: Seagull
Hall Bartlett adapted Richard Bach’s book and would have done much better if this movie was animated. The issue I had with the movie is that we are watching real seagulls (ok that’s impressive to some degree) but our protagonist talks! It just seems that if one were going to make a movie like this and wanted the birds talking, he/she would make it animated since no one has a problem with Nemo talking if he is drawn. Could you imagine how good Finding Nemo would do in the box office if real fish were used?
Jonathan (our lead gull) faces an uphill battle of acceptance and struggle. It is technically a ‘feel good’ story but the fact that the film was done with birds…real birds confuses the hell out of me! They don’t look very inspiring.
I should note however that this film was up for Oscar’s in Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing in 1973.
