The Hoax
I don't know exactly when I became a big fan of Richard Gere -- I think Chicago would be a good start, however -- but The Hoax is a solid reminder of why I like him and his radiating charm -- even when he's not trying to be charming.
DVD Review: The Hoax
I was never able to catch The Hoax in theaters, but the story of a reallife conman that pulled something like faking a biography of another, way more famous person ranks up there with Catch Me if You Can. Can a person with such huevos really exist? I assure you, he can and the DVD extras are there to prove it.
As a film, The Hoax is all about enjoying the characters and believing what really took place. Sometimes you are merely entertained by the shock of it, which is perfectly OK. Fortunately for us, there are some DVD extras that give a little more to the story of Clifford Irving.
Some of the extras you are going to find on the DVD are your usual deleted scenes (more than ten minutes of them), an extended sequence, a Making Of and some nice commentary. If this story really interests you, which it should, you'll especially enjoy an added extra involving Mike Wallace, who discusses the interview he had with Irving and his impressions of the man.
