Halo 3
Considering that I can think of a plethora of friends who went out and bought on Xbox 360 just for the release of Halo 3, this news isn't exactly surprising. After the console and its main competitor, PS3, lost out in sales every month to the Wii since each ones release, Xbox 360 finally took the top spot in September.
Halo 3 Pushes Xbox 360 Sales
Master Chief didn't only fight off an invading alien race, but Microsoft competitors as well. Halo 3 helped Microsoft sell 528,000 units during the month of September, while it only sold 277,000 units in August. Halo 3 sold a whopping 3.3 million units during September (in only 12 days), making it the bestselling game of 2007. The game's closest competitor is Wii Play, which sold about a million less with 2.2 million.
Xbox 360 didn't owe all its credit to Halo 3, but Microsoft's decision to price cut the console and increase its warranty from one to three years -- something that will cost the company $1 billion to cover.
The Wii may have lost a month, but it's still selling strong. Up 97,000 units from August, the console sold 496,000 units in September.
The same can't be said for Sony's PS3, which continues to struggle. Unlike the other two consoles, the PS3 watched sales drop from 131,000 to 119,000 in September. Sony has nobody to blame either, as they also released some of their own exclusive, self-published games such as Warhawk, Lair and Heavenly Sword. The bait is out there, just nobody's biting down hard enough to purchase the console itself.
