The Comebacks The Comebacks

The Comebacks spoofs all the well known sports movies where underdogs triumph over adversity. David Koechner plays the coach. Anyone familiar with his roles in Anchorman or Snakes on a Plane knows that Koechner doesn't do anything subtly. He even talked about his acting in big, broad terms.

David Koechner Coaches The Comebacks

"It’s the highest level of acting," he joked. "Carl [Weathers] and I came in and set the bar very early. If you can’t act this good, you’re out of here. Act harder! Faster! No, I think the acting in this picture is ridiculous."

Of course, in a spoof, the characters can't know they're being ridiculous. "This one you’re playing it straight. Because you are spoofing inspirational sports movies, and those are played quite serious, that gives you the roadmap of how to play this one. You play it serious, as if you were playing that scene. You’re doing an inspirational movie. The material suggest otherwise, so if you play it as if you were doing a real drama, that’s what makes it funny. You get them going this way, and then you bring it back that way."

There are countless movie coaches in the various targets of The Comebacks' mockery, but Koechner singled out one inspiration. "[G.D.] Spradlin from North Dallas Forty and One on One, who’s my favorite coaching character. He’s awesome. He’s fantastic, great actor. He’s got real gravitas. Any inspirational sports film has that coach, right? So that’s who you drawn on, all of them. It’s an amalgamation of all those kinds of guys so it’s almost a stereotype, an archetype so you’re drawing on that idea. We’ve all had coaches, or coach-like figures in life, so you give them a little nod."

Koechner coaches real life little league for his son. He hopes to have more success than his character in The Comebacks. "Everything Coach Fields touches turns to dirt. It is hard to coach your own children because they immediately don’t listen to you. But I remember one day Charlie was playing baseball by himself in the house. He didn’t want me to play. He was using a paper ball and bat that he made, and even then I thought, ‘Well, here’s an opportunity maybe to show him how to swing the bat.’ And I showed him and he was so surprised that I knew what I was talking about, so now he will listen, a little bit."

The Comebacks is playing in theaters.
