Melora Hardin is best known as Jan from The Office, a show that finds humor in the awkward pauses as things don't come out the way people intended. In the sports movie spoof The Comebacks, there is no such subtlety.
Hardin Comebacks to The Office
"For me, it depends I guess on the mood I’m in," said Hardin. "I can be definitely very silly and playful and ridiculous but I would say most of the time I’m a little more subtle."
Hardin plays the coach's wife in a compilation of every underdog story ever filmed. However, she did not look at any movie's wife character for inspiration. "[Director] Tom [Brady]’s idea was sort of more that she was the kind of the grounding force in the movie, and that she was the way that the audience could get a little more connected to this outrageous situation. That was really all that we were going for. Mostly making her funny and silly, but somehow keeping her in tune with maybe the audience’s perspective somewhat."
That part was all acting. Hardin does not fill that role at home. "That’s funny. No, my life is nothing like their life, about as nothing like as it can possibly get. I’m nothing like Barb and I would say my husband is nothing like Coach, thank God."
Returning to The Office, Jan is trying to be a stay at home significant other. Now Hardin has additional costuming since Jan had a boob job. "Oh no, those are my boobs. Can’t you tell? [joking] I call that my strap-on chest. That’s my strap-on. It’s just a plain old strap-on chest. You use lots of pillows, lots of padding, and then my breasts right at the very tippety top."
All in a day's work. "I don’t think it’s fun, but I think it’s interesting. And definitely I feel, I really do, like sometimes developing characters from the outside in. Sometimes that’s a lot of fun and I really do feel like a different person when I walk around with my strap-on."
