River Road Entertainment is finally making some ground on Terrence Malick's long-gestating drama, Tree of Live, by picking up Heath Ledger and Sean Penn to star.

Ledger has been given the lead role with Penn coming in for support. The title character (Ledger) will also have a leading lady, which has yet to be cast.
River Road Entertainment, the same people that helped Malick create his last feature, The New World, will produce. Colin Farrell was once expected to star in Tree of Life, but both he and some of the film's shooting locations have been nixed.
Malick is closely guarding the film's plot, which is being described as a complex drama.
Expect something off the beaten path, as it was River Road who produced such films as Into the Wild, Lust, Caution and Brokeback Mountain.
Penn has remained close to Malick ever since starring in his war drama The Thin Red Line.
Ledger can next be seen in I'm Not There and will appear as the Joker in next summer's Batman installment The Dark Knight.
