Columbia Pictures has a reason to let out a breath of relief. With the WGA strike possibly only a day or two out, Paul Haggis dropped off a finished draft of the Bond 22 script. Sweet relief! But what about the other tentpoles currently giving scribes writer cramps?

Bond 22 Script One of Many
Haggis might be first in, but there are tons of other big scribes feverishly dotting 'i's and crossing 't's to get their scripts done and polished. The scripts have been pouring into studios for quick reads and edits before being rushed straight back to the writers for adjustments. For once it seems like everybody in Hollywood is not only on the same page, but all are working extremely hard for a common goal -- get solid scripts completed in a timely manner.

"I'm getting drafts in, and I'm flipping them around like crazy," said one Hollywood exec.

"Normally, you'd give notes and they go off and they write, take their time, do some things in the notes and not others," another studio exec said. "Everyone is playing for the same team now. That way, we have our best shot at making a movie."

Some of the other tentpoles currently being waited on include X-Men Origins: Wolverine, currently under James Vanderbilt's pen, The Fast and the Furious 4 by Chris Morgan, and Nottinham, Universal's retelling of the Robin Hood story with Russell Crowe attached to star. Scribe Brian Helgeland not only had to hand a draft in to Ridley Scott yesterday but is expected to have a script ready for The Taking of Pelham One Two Three today. Not a small project either, as both Denzel Washington and John Travolta are already attached to star.

In order to avoid too much back-in-forth, some scribes are turning in multiple drafts of the same script to allow for various scene changes and multiple endings.

Paramount still isn't taking any chances, and has asked for three entirely separate drafts for G.I. Joe. Stuart Beattie is handling one draft, John Lee Hancock the other, and the writing team of Brian Koppelman and David Levien will be turning in the third. Paramount is expected to combine the best aspects of all three.

New Line has a backup plan for Four Christmases. Vince Vaughn, who is onboard to star, is not a member of the WGA and is known to work on scripts. If the script is not complete by the time WGA goes AWOL, expect Vaughn to get his fingers inky.

Studio execs are dodging lunches and, for once, everybody is working. Maybe the threat of a WGA strike wasn't so bad after all.
