Heroes second season is underway with Volume 2: Generations. There have been many changes in the four months since Volume 1: Genesis ended, and even the last few weeks of episodes with the character developments. Series creator Tim Kring shed some light on things like why did Parkman and his wife suddenly divorce.
Kring on Volume 2: Generations
"Clearly he went from a man who's wife was pregnant and expecting a baby and living in LA to a man who’s living in New York and no longer with his wife," said Kring. "So something happened in that intervening time and we will find out about it. But yes, we will see the wife again."
Claire is exploring a new boyfriend who has been one of HRG's tag and release subjects. Someone on HRG's side might suspect the kid is not all good, or the hopeful romantics might root for the lovers. On Heroes, you never know.
"The sort of secret of the show is that it really is about the relationships and really about the character. So we always try to focus all of our stories, filter it through that idea. But, you know, in our show things change and things morph and become very complicated and different as you watch. So one of the hallmarks of the show is that nobody is really who they seem to be."
New cast members continue to join, such as Elle, the mysterious stranger played by Kristen Bell. "The character was created before we cast Kristen. We had been talking about the character for a while and thinking about the character for a while, but when you do cast an actor, especially one that you’re familiar with their work and has as much personality as Kristen has, you try to tailor the character a little closer to who the actor is. So it’s hard to know when one starts to influence the other, but certainly the character was created and conceived long before we cast Kristen."
With so many new developments, not everybody can be addressed each week. Part of the challenge now is balancing all the storylines. "Last night [10/15/07]’s episode was a great example of it. We didn’t have Hiro, Masi’s character or Milo’s character, Peter Petrelli in last night’s episode and others. Those were two big storylines that we followed from the very beginning of the season, and you watched that episode last night and it’s compelling and intriguing. I don’t think that you really miss seeing them for one episode because you know that their stories will pick right up where they left off last time."
