Caligula Imperial Edition
I lost my copy of Caligula while going to college at UCSB. God only knows how many classmates have lost their virginity to it by now. When I heard they were coming out with an Imperial Edition, I had to get myself a copy.
Unrated in its truest form, Caligula is one of those films that is really unrated. A historical look at one of Rome's most fun leaders, Caligula not only gives us a different account on how Rome was, but is likely to be the only full feature, large scale, porno out there.
DVD Review: Caligula Imperial Edition
Three discs come with the Imperial Edition. Why so many? Well, all three are the same, just in case you get a little er, too crazy with the other too.
Well, not really, but I would have respected that. What are respectable are all the nice little features and the film's stunning quality. (Sorta) Banned in the late 70s, Caligula is back like never before. Bonus features include great commentary, a slightly different version of the film, video interviews, your usual making of, deleted scenes, alternate scene, behind-the-scenes, an album of photos from the set, and the film's original trailers.
One thing that always trips me out when watching Caligula is how (what's the best word here?) gratuitous it is. If you have only heard rumors about the film, I can assure you that most of them true. Guys blowing loads, girls peeing on people and actual intercourse are to be seen here. Sounds crazy, right? Well, what's even crazier is that the film features an ensemble cast that includes Malcolm McDowell, Peter O'Toole, and The Queen herself, Helen Mirren.
Who knows how many porn stars.
The great part about Caligula is that it is surprisingly true in plenty of its portrayals of Rome. I know, I didn't believe it either, but then later caught a History Channel special on the film and was shocked to see how many events and naked scenery actually matched up.
Rome wasn't all hunky-dory like many other feature films would suggest. I guess it took some funding by Penthouse to show just how sadistic it was.
Best yet, Caligula Imperial Edition should be able to satisfy your biggest historian or your biggest pervert. Your pick.
Caligula Imperial Edition is out on DVD now.
