Though Warner Bros won't admit it, I know a crush when I see a crush. Snyder stole the show last March with 300 and is looking to follow suit with Watchmen. Warner Bros. is so geeked on their up and coming director that they have agreed to kick him some extra skrilla so he can create a short, Tales of the Black Freighter, that he will attach to Watchmen.

So, what is Tales of the Black Freighter?

Snyder to Double-Adapt Tales of the Black Freighter

Having read Watchmen, I must admit that I shuffled quickly through the sections involving Tales of the Black Freighter. Think about it: a comicbook inside a comicbook, and it's not nearly as good. Unless you get a major boner for pirates, it is hard to relate to the comic's story. Black Freighter's that is.

Since I can't remember how Black Freighter's story relates to Watchmen, I am assuming that a lot of it will be left out of the film. Since that is (likely) the case, Zack Snyder has decided to take the time to give the comic's comic its own mini-film.

A source inside Warner Bros. tells MovieHole that Warner Bros. has greenlit Tales of the Black Freighter with some extra budget being provided to afford the mini-film.

Tales of the Black Freighter is a comic book within the Watchmen universe, that also serves the main plot. The comic is read by a teenage boy while he sits beside a newsstand, whose proprietor, contemplates the latest headlines and discusses them with his customers. The specific issues shown in Watchmen chronicle a castaway's increasingly desperate attempts to return home to warn his family of the impending arrival of the Black Freighter, a phantom pirate ship which houses the souls of the dead.

I wasn't into it on paper -- it seriously distracted from the story -- but maybe it will be a ton cooler as its own entity.
