Guillermo del Toro
While contemplating Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Guillermo del Toro figured he'd take on a completely different genre with Champions.
Guillermo Del Toro to Direct United Artists' Champions
United Artists has picked up Guillermo del Toro and his Champions, a sci-fi actioner that the helmer will write, direct and produce.
Based on the 1968-69 British TV series, Champions will follow the adventures of a team of secret government agents who are rescued from a plane crash by an advanced civilization and given superhuman abilities. The original series starred Stuart Damon, Alexandra Bastedo and William Gaunt and mixed adventure, humor and glamour into its plotlines.
Though my count could be off, Champions would represent the fifth project from United Artists since its resurrection last year by Tom Cruise, Paula Wagner and MGM. Lions for Lambs is prepping for theatrical release while Valkyrie, Pinkville and Die a Little are currently in (pre-)production.
Known for the fantasy and comicbook genre with films like Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy, science-fiction is del Toro's way of switching things up.
